Safe Church Policy to be Reviewed by Diocesan Council Following Episcopal Election

As members of the Christian community within the Anglican Diocese of Montreal, we affirm the dignity and worth of all persons. Through our baptism as Christians, we have committed ourselves to following the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In this commitment we have willingly and knowingly entered into a “Covenant Relationship”, and are committed to making the diocese of Montreal safe(r). The Diocese, through Diocesan Council, is looking at reviewing our existing safe church protocol to ensure that our policy evolves and reflects best practices.

This is the first time that the diocese has used Canon 1 since its revision following the last episcopal election. Diocesan Council intends to review Canon 1 following the election to better understand how the process under the revisions was exercised, the challenges the Search Committee faced, identify gaps in both process and policy, areas of concern, what needs the Search Committee encountered, and make any necessary changes.

The Diocese of Montreal affirms its commitment to the church being a safe space where we understand safeguarding as a necessary and vital component of each of our lives as members of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal.
